about

Redwoods on Mars is the first single off San Francisco indie group E&M's debut full-length album.

Elysha Rom-Povolo and Mary Hansell both studied classical music since they were kids. They became friends in 2008 when they played together in the 8-piece indie collective, Photons. In 2011, they formed a studio project together that became E&M.

Their first EP, Fingernails, combines a variety of sounds and styles. Their second EP gravitates toward pop but with a low-fi production vibe. Their third release, and first full-length, brings on the talented, and also classically-trained Evan Walker on bass.

Due out in 2014, the album has a crisper, more sophisticated sound than previous releases. Toy instruments, clarinet, autoharp, synthesizers, bells, and hand percussion feature prominently against Mary's melodic and soulful vocals and Evan's active lines.

Inspirations include Etta James, Lou Reed, Lorde, Talking Heads, Electric Guest, Whitney Houston, Bat for Lashes, and others. Fans of female-led groups like Haim or Beach House will find much to love here.

The group plans to add two more members for a limited number of performances on the West Coast in spring of 2014. In 2013 E&M played twice - once for a party of several hundred friends and family to celebrate the release of their second EP and once as Bottom of the Hill headliners.

PRESS FOR PREVIOUS RELEASES:
“Rather than being another Tennis or Beach House, E&M are harder edged, with a post-punk sensibility that is missed by most of the others in this genre. Laced with a slight lo-fi production vibe, E&M deliver an EP that is strong from start to finish. This is definitely a pick to garner a wider audience.” - Floorshime Zipper Boots

“Nice electronic pop music.. Will make you dance.” - POTEM (French)

lyrics

I wake
from my reverie
and I take
just a minute to breath
I hope
you know how much it cost me
to lose my daydream

in it
we were spaceships
we were spinning through the atmosphere
watching stars and nebulas pass by
we were elephants
we played piano for all the redwoods on top of mars

Sped up our heartache's over
forgetting hands are wearing
light peaking through the shadows
rings forming round our fingers

rounding the corner the summit was ahead of us
racing to meet kings of galaxies
we were antelopes
we played mandolins for the lions underneath the stars

Sped up our heartache's over
forgetting hands are wearing
light peaking through the shadows
rings forming round our fingers

I wake
from my reverie
and I take
just a minute to breath
I hope
you know how much this cost me
